RENOVATION OF STRAWBERRY COTTAGE DECK

In architecture terms, a deck is a level surface usually outdoor that is capable of supporting different weights, similar to a floor but often elevated. At Strawberry Hill Farm we are privileged to have lovely decks, which more guests can enjoy while admiring the views. We took it upon ourselves to renovate one deck in particular, which is located directly across from Strawberry Hill Lodge. Our team built the magnificent strawberry deck in 2019; every piece of wood used in the deck was sourced from our own farm. The deck is 10 m by 6 m in size and was deliberately placed close to a water source (dam) to make it stand out.

The deck is ideal for kids and can also be used for general relaxing. At Strawberry Hill Farm, we want the best for our guests at all times, thus we provide incline seats with large umbrellas. Guests can enjoy the calm and tranquillity of nature while relaxing in the sun and feasting their eyes on stunning views.

The existing pine planks were removed as the initial phase in the deck renovation. Part of the reason for the renovation was that we had previously used softwood, which was pine, which is known for being non-durable and subject to insect and fungi damage
In comparison to hardwood such as eucalyptus, it is more durable and even better when treated in a treatment facility. On the plus side, softwood have a more appealing appearance on a deck than hardwood.

We are proud of the farm's resources, and the fact that we have been able to accomplish so much with them is wonderful. Eucalyptus grandis and blue gum were the woods utilized as a substitute. The tree species was chosen for its durability and resistance to the weather conditions that cause the plank to deteriorate. When a plank is left exposed to seasonal weather changes, it will flex and lose its quality.

The second step was to harvest these tree species on the farm and cut them into 25mm by 3m blocks. The blocks are then fed into a stenner machine, which slices them into straight planks. This procedure took two weeks to complete. The planks are properly stacked after processing so that they don't bend as they lose moisture.

After allowing adequate time for the planks to dry, the third step was to attach them to the wood deck frame. Placing the planks in a level manner with a 2cm gap between them. "The distance in between helps the planks to breathe," Andre added. "When it's moist, it expands in size, and when it's dry, it shrinks, so the spacing in between allows for these adjustments." This phrase took the team around two weeks to complete, with the planks being carefully fitted for deck stability and, most importantly for beauty.

The final phrase, was to paint the deck with a timber seal. The brand of timber seal used was Powafix Waksol. Powafix Waksol is a solvent and wax based timber sealer with excellent water repelling properties. On the deck, we used two coats using paint brush (50mm), this is the recommended standard for maximum protection and protection against harsh weather conditions. The other positive thing about the sealer is that it darkens the timber which is eye catching.
This was one of many exciting projects for the team. We cant wait for our guest to enjoy the deck.
